Beta-defensin in stool
The beta-defensin 2 stool test measures the amount of beta-defensin 2, a naturally occurring immune protein produced by the intestinal wall in response to bacteria, fungi, or other stimuli. Beta-defensin 2 is part of the innate immune system and helps neutralize pathogens before they can cause harm.
An elevated level may indicate an activated immune response in the intestine and can occur in cases of intestinal inflammation, disruptions to the gut microbiome, or infections. The test can therefore provide valuable additional information about the health of the intestinal wall.
When is this test recommended?
This test may be useful if you are experiencing:
- Abdominal pain or intestinal cramps
- Chronic diarrhea or irregular bowel movements
- A bloated feeling
- Suspected intestinal inflammation
- Recurring gastrointestinal symptoms with no apparent cause
- Suspected disruption of the gut microbiome

- Beta-defensin 2 (in stool)
What does an abnormal result mean?
An elevated beta-defensin 2 level indicates that the intestinal wall is exhibiting an increased immune response. This can occur, among other things, in cases of:
- Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
- Bacterial or parasitic infections
- Changes in the gut microbiota (dysbiosis)
- Increased activity of the innate immune system
A normal result makes an active immune response less likely, but does not completely rule out gastrointestinal symptoms or other conditions.
How is the test performed?
For this test, you will collect a small amount of stool at home. You will then send the sample to our laboratory following the enclosed instructions.
