Menopausal Symptoms (9)

Menopausal Symptoms? A blood test can help you see the bigger picture

Filters

Sudden hot flashes, restless nights caused by sweating, and a menstrual cycle that’s no longer what it used to be—many women in their forties and beyond recognize these kinds of symptoms. Fatigue during menopause, mood swings, and a body that feels different than before are also commonly reported during this stage of life.

Menopause is a natural process. According to the NHG guideline, for women aged 40 and older, the focus is primarily on symptoms and changes in the menstrual cycle, not on a single hormone test. This guideline even advises against using a single measurement of FSH, LH, or estradiol to determine whether you are going through menopause: these levels fluctuate too much during this period to draw any reliable conclusions from them.

Why Blood Tests Can Still Be Valuable

Just because a hormone-menopause test alone doesn’t tell us much doesn’t mean that blood tests are pointless. Symptoms attributed to menopause can also be caused by other factors. For example, thyroid-related symptoms and menopausal symptoms can sometimes be very similar in terms of their manifestations, or they may be due to low iron levels. The NHG guideline lists TSH and hemoglobin, among other tests, as tests that may be considered when indicated.

A blood test for menopause symptoms won’t give you a definitive answer to the question, “Am I going through menopause?” What it can do, however, is provide a broader picture: insight into what else—besides hormonal changes—might be contributing to fatigue, mood swings, or low energy.

Which blood values you can have tested for menopause symptoms

On this page, you’ll find tests that can help you assess, among other things:

  • Thyroid function
  • Complete blood count and iron status
  • Vitamins and Minerals
  • glucose and cholesterol
  • Relevant hormone levels, when there is a specific reason to measure them

Would you prefer to discuss your results with a hormone specialist?

Would you like not only to see your blood test results, but also to discuss them in person with a doctor who specializes in hormones and (peri-)menopause? During the (peri-)menopause hormone consultation with Dr. Freeha Arshad, you’ll spend 20 minutes with her reviewing your symptoms and test results, and discussing the appropriate next steps. This consultation is not a substitute for your primary care physician, but it can be a valuable addition if you’d prefer to speak with a hormone specialist first.
