Listeria is a bacterium that can cause a food infection. The chance of being infected with listeria is small but the consequences can be serious. Especially pregnant women have to be careful because it can lead to a miscarriage or an early birth. Only 4 in a million people get this disease in the Netherlands each year.
Listeria is mainly found in products that have been kept cool for a long time and are eaten without being heated. Products at risk are raw milk cheese, pre-packaged smoked fish, pre-packaged meat products and raw animal products.
Pregnants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems should avoid these risk products or only eat them if they have been properly cooked beforehand.
Symptoms of alisteria infection are;
- fever,
- chills,
- pain in the back and

The duration of the symptoms can vary greatly from a few days to several months. In pregnant women, a listeria infection can lead to a miscarriage or meningitis.
