Clostridium species are gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria found in low-oxygen environments, such as in soil, water and the human gastrointestinal tract. Some species can produce toxins that cause serious diseases such as tetanus, botulism and intestinal infections.

The Clostridium Differentiation Test helps identify specific Clostridium species in a stool sample. This is particularly relevant when a previous bowel examination has shown elevated Clostridium levels or when symptoms such as chronic intestinal complaints, gas formation and inflammation are present. By identifying the exact species, a targeted treatment approach can be determined.

What does this test measure?

This test identifies the presence of several Clostridium species, including:

• Clostridium sporogenes - Occurs in the soil and gastrointestinal tract and can potentially produce neurotoxins.
• Clostridium histolyticum - Can cause tissue damage and is sometimes associated with infections.
• Clostridium sordellii - A rare but potentially dangerous bacterium that can cause serious infections.
