About STDs
In the Netherlands, approximately 100,000 people contract an STD annually through unsafe sex. An STD can have serious consequences if the disease is not treated in time.
Unsafe sex is the main cause of contracting an STD. Unsafe sex is more than penetration without a condom. Rubbing contact with the mucous membranes of the vagina or anus can also lead to the transmission of an STD. Oral sex is also not without risk.
STDs such as HIV, hepatitis and syphilis can also be transmitted through blood. This can already happen with an unhygienically applied tattoo or piercing.
An STD is not immediately visible on examination. Depending on the conditions, it can take from 10 days (chlamydia) to six weeks (syphilis).
