The Zonuline test is a targeted blood test that provides insight into the permeability of the intestinal wall. This test is particularly suitable when Leaky Gut Syndrome is suspected, a condition that can contribute to a wide range of symptoms, including food intolerances, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, and neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
Zonulin is a protein produced naturally by the body that plays a key role in regulating the connections between intestinal cells. Elevated zonulin levels in the blood indicate a disruption of this barrier, allowing unwanted substances to enter the bloodstream through the intestines. This is also known as increased intestinal permeability.
This blood test consists of:
- Zonuline in serum (method: ELISA)
A value below 48 ng/ml is considered normal. Higher values may indicate increased intestinal permeability. This test is performed by Labstein and, depending on the chosen blood collection partner (RP or Stein), can be performed independently or as a supplementary test.
This test helps identify underlying causes of chronic symptoms that may stem from an imbalance in the intestinal barrier. A valuable addition for people with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms or complex immune responses.
