Luteinizing hormone

LH (Luteinizing Hormone) is produced in the pituitary gland (in the brain) and stimulates ovulation and subsequently the production of progesterone in women. In men LH is needed for the production of testosterone.

LH in women

The concentration of LH in women varies per day of the menstrual cycle. For a good interpretation it is important to know on which day of the menstrual cycle blood was taken (around ovulation or not).

These are the reference values for the test method used by our laboratory

follicular 2.4 - 6.6 IU/L (follicular phase, before ovulation)
mid-cycle 9.1 - 74.2 IU/L (ovulation phase)
luteal 0.9 - 9.3 IU/L (luteal phase, after ovulation)
post-menopausal 10.4 - 64.6 IU/L (after menopause)
