IgA total
The IgA blood test determines the level of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the blood. IgA is an essential component of the immune system and plays a key role in the body's defenses, especially in protecting mucous membranes such as those of the intestines, airways and throat.
An abnormal IgA value may indicate impaired immune function. For example, a decreased IgA may occur with increased susceptibility to infections, certain autoimmune diseases or gut-related conditions. Increased IgA may fit chronic inflammation, infection or liver disease.
This test is often used for:
recurring or unexplained infections
long-term intestinal complaints
suspicion of an immune deficiency
Additional diagnostics for autoimmune diseases
assessment of general immune status
The IgA blood test measures total serum IgA and thus differs from secretory IgA (sIgA), which is determined via stool or saliva and provides more insight into local intestinal immunity.
Good to know:
If anything abnormal is found that may require immediate medical follow-up, you will always be called by a doctor or medical professional first.
