Hepatitis E IgM
This test measures Hepatitis E IgM antibodies.
Hepatitis E Virus-Ak (IgM) Hepatitis E Virus IgM antibodies.
The hepatitis E IgM test measures specific IgM antibodies against the hepatitis E virus (HEV) in the blood. These antibodies appear early in the course of an infection and usually indicate a recent or active infection. The test is appropriate for symptoms consistent with liver inflammation or unexplained abnormalities in liver values.
When is this test useful?
With symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, flu-like feeling
In jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin or eyes)
With elevated liver enzymes (ALAT/ASAT) without clear cause
After possible exposure, for example through insufficiently heated pork, game or contaminated drinking water
In pregnancy or with a lowered resistance, because hepatitis E can then become more severe
Important points of interest
The IgM test shows recency, but says nothing about a past infection (IgG testing is required for that).
In case of doubt or complex symptoms, combination with other liver or hepatitis tests may be advised
Always discuss results in conjunction with symptoms and other lab values
