Dientamoeba fragilis
The Dientamoeba fragilis stool test checks for the presence of the intestinal parasite Dientamoeba fragilis in the stool. This parasite is found in the human intestine and can cause intestinal symptoms in some people. Not everyone who carries the parasite experiences symptoms.
When is this test useful?
A test for Dientamoeba fragilis may be useful in cases of persistent or recurring gastrointestinal symptoms, such as:
Abdominal pain or cramps
Diarrhea or irregular bowel movements
A bloated feeling
Excessive gas formation
Nausea
Unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms
For this test, you’ll collect a small sample of stool, which will then be examined in the laboratory for the presence of Dientamoeba fragilis.
What do the results mean?
A positive result means that the parasite has been detected. This does not automatically mean that it is the cause of the intestinal symptoms. A negative result means that the parasite was not detected in the sample tested.
If the test result is positive and symptoms persist, it is advisable to discuss with your primary care physician whether treatment or further testing is necessary.
