IgE food allergies are becoming more and more common. Often you already know as a child that you have a true nut allergy or gluten allergy because the effects are often immediately apparent. Still, it makes sense to chart these allergies from time to time.

Follow-up tests with a positive IgE total value

Test further for food or inhalation allergens

A positive result on the IgE total test means that your immune system may be allergic to certain substances. But: this test does not show exactly what you are allergic to. To find out, you can do follow-up testing for specific foods or inhalant allergens.

What does an elevated IgE total value mean?

IgE (Immunoglobulin E) is an antibody that your body produces during allergic reactions. If your total IgE is elevated, it may indicate an allergy to something you eat or inhale

Elevated IgE levels are also common in eczema, asthma or hay fever.

How do you test further?

After an elevated total IgE result, there are two logical next steps depending on your symptoms and suspicions:

IgE Food Screening

Do you have complaints after eating (such as itching in the mouth, gastrointestinal complaints or skin rashes)? If so, you can use a food screening to test if you have an IgE-mediated food allergy.

IgE Inhalation Mix

Do you have symptoms such as sneezing, shortness of breath, itchy eyes or a stuffy nose? If so, an inhalation allergy may be the cause.
