Prolactin
Prolactin is a hormone from the pituitary gland that is best known for its role in breastfeeding, but also has an important function in hormonal balance in men.
Increased prolactin can inhibit the production of testosterone and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido and erectile dysfunction in men. Therefore, this test is increasingly requested by men, often in conjunction with testosterone testing.
In women, prolactin is determined in cases of fertility problems, unexplained milk secretion or an upset cycle, among others.
Elevated levels can be caused by stress, medication, hormonal imbalance or - in rare cases - a prolactinoma (benign pituitary tumor).
For reliable results, blood sampling in the morning (around 08:00 am) is recommended and it is important to avoid stress and intense exercise beforehand.
